Pergine Valsugana is one of those towns you discover slowly. It is an old town in the Valsugana valley, a few kilometres from Trento, gathered among mountains, hills and lakes, with a historic centre of palaces, stone portals and streets climbing toward the castle that watches over it from above. From here, in just a few minutes, you reach the warm water of the lakes, the trails in the green and the art city of Trento. In this guide we tell you what to see in Pergine and the surrounding area, based only on places we know and that are truly worth a visit. We at Italy Holiday have welcomed guests in this area for a long time, and this is the itinerary we would suggest to a friend.
Pergine, the old town and its castle
Pergine Valsugana is a town of ancient origin, set in a green valley between Trento and the Valsugana lakes. Its historic centre is gathered around the town hall square and the streets that climb upward, among buildings of different eras, stone portals and old frescoed houses that tell of centuries of life in the town.
Watching over the town, from the top of the Tegazzo hill, stands Castel Pergine, a fortress of medieval origin that for centuries controlled the road to Trento and the way into the Valle dei Mocheni. From its position you take in the whole Upper Valsugana with your eyes, from the basin of Lake Caldonazzo to the Fersina stream. It is the symbol of Pergine and the ideal starting point to understand this borderland, suspended between the mountains, the lakes and the plain.
What to see in Pergine and the surrounding area
One of the loveliest things about Pergine is that it sits at the centre of an area rich in places to discover. In a few minutes by car you can go from the old town to a swimmable lake, from a historic park to a gorge carved into the rock, all the way to the art and history of Trento. Here are the places we recommend.
1. Lake Caldonazzo, the warmest water in Valsugana
A few minutes from Pergine, Lake Caldonazzo awaits you, a large stretch of water set in the green of the Valsugana. Its most loved feature is the temperature: it is one of the warmest lakes in Europe, with water reaching around 24 degrees in summer. This makes it perfect for relaxing swims and for whole days spent on the beach with the family.
The shores offer equipped beaches, lawns and small docks where you can rest, and the water is not just for swimming. Here you can practise sailing, SUP (stand up paddle), canoeing and other water activities. The swimming season runs roughly from May to the end of September. It is reached in a few minutes by car from the centre of Pergine.

2. Lake Levico, a fjord in the heart of the valley
Just beyond Caldonazzo, near Levico Terme, Lake Levico awaits you. It has a long, distinctive shape that recalls a fjord, and it is surrounded by wooded hills. It is one of the Trentino lakes awarded the Blue Flag: its waters are among the mildest in the area and its shores are gentle, perfect for swimming, walking and cycling with the family.
Here you find tree-lined free beaches, equipped establishments and marked swimming areas, as well as the hire of rowing and electric boats. As with Caldonazzo, the ideal season runs from late spring to early autumn, with bathing roughly from May to September. It is reached on foot from the centre of Levico Terme or in a few minutes by car from Pergine.

3. The Habsburg historic park, a walk through time
In Levico Terme you find the Parco secolare degli Asburgo, a large Habsburg-era thermal garden, inaugurated in the early years of the twentieth century together with the great spa hotel of 1905. Spread over about 13 hectares, it is one of the loveliest historic parks in Trentino. Walking along its paths you meet century-old beeches, giant redwoods, magnolias and cedars, as well as the elegant Art Nouveau Villa Paradiso.
It is a peaceful, romantic place, beautiful in every season: blooms in spring, fresh shade in summer and golden foliage in autumn. You reach it on foot in a few minutes from the centre of Levico Terme.

4. Orrido di Ponte Alto, the gorge carved by the Fersina
Along the same Fersina stream that flows down from Pergine toward Trento hides the Orrido di Ponte Alto, a deep, narrow gorge carved into the red rock. Here ancient stone dams give rise to waterfalls over forty metres high, and the visit unfolds along metal walkways and a spiral staircase, all the way to a viewpoint behind the veil of water.
It is a spectacular, atmospheric place, where nature meets a story of ancient engineering: the water-control works were commissioned in the sixteenth century by prince-bishop Bernardo Clesio. The visit is possible only with guides; check the current days and times on the official website before setting off. It is reached in a few minutes by car from Pergine, along the road toward Trento.

5. Dosso di Sant'Agata, the walk with a view
For those who love easy walking, the Dosso di Sant'Agata is a perfect destination. It is one of the three hills that surround Trento, the three "teeth" that gave the Roman city the name Tridentum. On its sunny side open farmed terraces, and at the top the little church of Sant'Agata awaits you, which took its current form in 1566.
An easy walk of about fifty minutes takes you to the summit, rewarded with a wide view over the Adige Valley and Monte Bondone, among quiet woods. It is reached easily by leaving the Valsugana road, and it makes a lovely stop halfway between Pergine and Trento.

6. Buonconsiglio Castle, the story of the prince-bishops
Once down in Trento, you cannot miss Buonconsiglio Castle, the largest monumental complex in the city. From the thirteenth century until the end of the eighteenth it was the residence of the prince-bishops of Trento, and today it brings together Castelvecchio, the Magno Palazzo and Torre Aquila, among art and archaeology collections.
Its most precious treasure lies precisely in Torre Aquila: the Cycle of the Months, an extraordinary set of International Gothic frescoes painted around 1400, which portrays in great detail the life of nobles and the labour of peasants across the seasons. It is one of the loveliest things to see in all of Trentino. It is reached in a few minutes by car or train from Pergine.

7. Piazza del Duomo in Trento, the heart of the city
In the heart of Trento, Piazza del Duomo awaits you, one of the most elegant squares in Italy. It is surrounded by the Cathedral of San Vigilio, the Palazzo Pretorio, the Civic Tower and the frescoed Cazuffi and Rella houses, with their façades painted with myths and allegories from the sixteenth century.
At the centre of the square stands the Neptune Fountain, a Baroque work from the eighteenth century. It was in the Cathedral of San Vigilio that the Council of Trent took place, between 1545 and 1563, an event that marked the history of Europe. It is the right place for a pause, a coffee and a walk among art and history. It is reached easily by train or car from Pergine.

8. The old town of Trento, a thousand years in one district
All around Piazza del Duomo opens the old town of Trento, a compact district to explore entirely on foot. Among the streets and squares you meet Renaissance palaces with frescoed façades, porticoes, fountains and quiet corners, in a centre that holds a thousand years of Roman, medieval and Renaissance art.
It is an elegant, human-scale city, framed by mountains, where every street holds a detail to discover. From Pergine you reach it in a few minutes, and it is the ideal destination for a day among history, culture and good food.

A practical tip before you go
Many of these places change their hours and services depending on the season, and some, like the Orrido di Ponte Alto, can be visited only with guides and on set days. Before planning your day, check the current hours on the official websites, so you avoid surprises and always arrive at the right moment.
