Rovereto is one of those towns that surprise you slowly. It has the quiet elegance of a Venetian centre, yet inside it holds one of Italy's most important art museums, a one-of-a-kind house-museum and a great bell that rings every evening for peace. In this guide we tell you what to see in Rovereto and the area around it, based only on places we know and that are truly worth visiting. At Italy Holiday we have been welcoming guests to this area for a long time, and this is the itinerary we would suggest to a friend.
What to see in Rovereto
Rovereto is a town to discover on foot, made of narrow streets, historic palazzi and museums that tell stories of art and memory. Everything sits close together, and in a single day you can move from contemporary art to medieval history, and on to the nature around it. Here are the places we recommend.
1. MART, the great museum of modern and contemporary art
The MART is the artistic heart of Rovereto and one of Italy's most important art museums. Its building, designed by architect Mario Botta, opens onto a covered piazza topped by a great steel-and-glass dome that lets light pour in from above. The entrance alone is a work to admire.
Its collections gather around 20,000 works, with a particular strength in Futurism and twentieth-century Italian art. Here you will find names like Depero, Balla and many other leaders of the avant-garde, alongside major temporary exhibitions that change through the year. It is an unmissable stop for art lovers, but also for anyone who simply wants to be surprised.

2. Casa d'arte futurista Fortunato Depero
A few steps from the centre stands the Casa d'arte futurista Depero, a truly special place: it is the only museum in the world founded by a Futurist artist. It was created by Fortunato Depero in 1957, who personally designed every detail, from the mosaics to the furniture to the painted panels.
Inside you find a joyful, colourful world of fabric tapestries, furniture, toys, advertising design and the famous Libro Imbullonato, a book held together by metal bolts. It is a cheerful, surprising place, perfect even for those travelling with children, where art, design and advertising blend into a single vision.

3. Rovereto Castle and the Italian War History Museum
At the top of the old town rises Rovereto Castle, a Venetian-type Alpine fortress, one of the best preserved in Trentino, with bastions, towers and wall-walks. Climbing up here rewards you with a fine view over Rovereto and the Vallagarina valley.
Since 1921 the castle has housed the Italian War History Museum, dedicated above all to the First World War, with weapons, uniforms, documents and photographs. It is one of Italy's leading museums on that period and brings together in one place the history of the fortress and the memory of the war, with walls and towers to explore.

4. The Bell of the Fallen, Maria Dolens
On the Colle di Miravalle, just above the town, stands the Bell of the Fallen, called Maria Dolens. It is one of the largest swinging bells in the world, cast from the bronze of the cannons of the First World War. It is a symbol of peace known all over the world.
Every evening the bell rings 100 times in memory of the fallen of all wars, without distinction of nation or faith. Hearing it as the sound spreads across the valley is a moment that stays with you. From the hill you also enjoy a wide view over the Vallagarina, which makes the visit even more moving.

5. Rovereto Civic Museum
If you are travelling with children or enjoy scientific curiosity, the Rovereto Civic Museum is a perfect stop. Founded in 1851, it is one of the oldest museums in Italy and gathers very varied collections: archaeology, dinosaur fossils, zoology, botany and minerals.
Making the visit even more engaging is the digital dome planetarium, where you can take an immersive journey among the stars. It is also an ideal place for a rainy day, able to delight grown-ups and children alike while teaching them something new.

6. Porta San Marco, the old Venetian gate
Walking through the old town, on Via Rialto, you come across Porta San Marco, the ancient town gate built by the Venetians in 1483. It is a small gem that tells centuries of history in a few stones.
Above it you can see the fresco with the Lion of St Mark, the symbol of Venice, its paw resting on an open book to signify peace. It is a perfect corner to understand the Venetian soul of Rovereto, among quiet lanes and period palazzi, where you can pause a moment and look up.

7. Eremo di San Colombano
A few minutes from Rovereto, towards Trambileno, one of the most striking places in Trentino awaits you: the Eremo di San Colombano. It is a tiny church set into a rock face about 120 metres high, above the gorge of the Leno stream.
The caves in the cliff were lived in from the 8th century by hermit monks, and inside you find fifteenth-century frescoes and the legend of the saint who defeats a dragon. You reach it by climbing a staircase carved into the rock: a small effort rewarded by a place out of time, silent and almost suspended in the void.

8. Castel Beseno, the largest fortress in Trentino
If you want to look beyond the town, a few kilometres to the north, in a panoramic position above the Adige valley, stands Castel Beseno, the largest fortress in Trentino. With its walls, bastions and wall-walks, it is one of the most imposing castles in the region.
Here you breathe in medieval history and discover the Battle of Calliano of 1487, told in an exhibition inside. Within its walls there are also historical reenactments with period costumes and encampments, and from the top you enjoy a magnificent view over the Vallagarina. It is a perfect destination for families and for anyone who loves castles.
